Tactical Urbanism

Tactical Urbanism is the act of implementing flexible and short-term projects as a way of prototyping urban design interventions. Using temporary improvements, the goal for Cascade would be to construct several tactical urbanist interventions at key locations in an effort to observe the effects of these solutions, evaluate their long-term impact and viability, and make modifications to plans based on levels of success.

Building Materials

Consistency is a key to good design, and temporary interventions are no exception. By keeping to a prescribed Materials Palette and concentrating several interventions in close proximity, the effects of these tactical changes become more appealing and apparent. Using wood, simulated grass, live plant materials, lighting and a paint scheme, will aid in creating recognizable structures for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers in addition to enhancing the overall aesthetic of the temporary installation.

Tips for Success

  • Partner with local businesses and nurseries to gather building and live plant materials in exchange for free advertising incentives
  • Identify and obtain necessary permits or permissions
  • Publicize intended interventions prior to installation
  • Be consistent with the design and materials used to construct solutions
  • Provide clear signage making users aware of the temporary nature of tactical urbanist installations and that they are to use at their own risk
  • Document use of interventions at regular intervals and at varying times of the day to best capture levels of success
